City Market of Slovenj Gradec
The market functions on a broader scale as the conclusion of the longitudinal series of gardens between the Main Square and Meško Street and as a transition from the small-scale service pavilions between the gardens, to the taller buildings leaning against the ex-city wall along Poštna Street. On a smaller scale, the market articulates three key environments with its layout: a pocket square entrance with a tree on Meško Street, an intermediate covered atrium with a view of the bell tower of St. Elizabeth’s Church, and a courtyard in the background of the Main Square with a restaurant garden under a tree.
The roof serves a dual purpose. On the upper side, it integrates with the green system of gardens through extensive greening, while on the lower side, in the form of an inverted gable roof, it directs the view towards the church tower. The inverted roof communicates with the topography of the surrounding rooftops and, with its diagonal ridge orientation, opens towards the entrance from the entrance promenade and Meško Street.
The underside of the roof is a unified wooden surface covering wooden pavilions composed of a vertical structure of facade slats. Foldable panels are located between the slats, allowing the pavilions to be completely opened or closed according to their content and the time of day. With their sandy color tone, the pavilions communicate with the surrounding plastered facades, while the mass of the wooden roof surface serves as an accent in the scale of the surrounding rooftops but does not overpower the context due to its low height.
